With an episode title like Branch Closing I admit my expectations were pretty high for this one. As usual The Office exceeded them. I was laughing from the opening teaser of the episode with Jim’s prank on Dwight sending faxes from future Dwight. I’m glad distance hasn’t stalled Jim’s tormenting of Dwight.
Then we get into the meat of the episode as Jan tells Michael that the branch is closing and that while some staff are going to be absorbed into the Stamford branch others are going to get packages, including Michael. Does she not understand that there aren’t Stanley trees or Phyllis farms. Michael then gives the most inspiring pep talk to the group – “We’re all screwed”. The staff reactions are classics from Angela blaming everyone to Kelly’s suicide pact a la Romeo and Juliet (the Claire Danes one of course) to Stanley’s desire to retire.
As an aside, Cinderella rocks and Bowling for Columbine probably should have been a bowling movie.
Before we get too worried about our Office friends, Michael recruits Dwight to head to New York to save the branch. Yeah, I said Dwight. Wouldn’t that make you feel better too? It should though – no one can role play like Dwight.
Fortunately all’s well that end’s well (except for Stanley and Ryan). Josh didn’t want the job so Scranton is instead going to absorb Stamford. I loved the Michael-Dwight reminiscence and the final “we did it” dance.
Let me give a quick shout out to Jim, Dunder Mifflen’s go-to guy for the number 2 position in any branch.
Bring on the merger.
