I’m back – in time for TV season and at a new home

August 31, 2008

As you can see from the last posting, it’s been a long time since we’ve visited with each other.  I could make up some story about solidarity with the TV strikers but that would be a lie.  The truth is life just got busy – 2 kids and a busy job will do that to you.  Hopefully it’s all water under the bridge because I’m back and ready to share my TV ramblings under my own domain.

No longer am I Avi’s TV Ramblings.  Now I’m Ramblings of a TV Lover and you can find me at www.tvlover.net

So what can you expect from me in the next couple of weeks.  First, my special Fall TV Preview edition.  I’m aiming to have that up for the end of the weekend before the official kickoff on Monday – Go Gossip Girl and Prison Break.  I also may go back to sharing my daily TV viewing schedule.  I did get a few complaints when I stopped writing that people didn’t know when a show was on.  Also, look forward to the usual insightful reviews and commentary on the TV news of the day but with more audio video fun.

It’s good to be back and I can’t wait to hear from you soon so check me out at http://www.tvlover.net.

One Week Into the New Season and I’m Already Way Behind

October 3, 2007

I can’t believe how far behind I am on my TV watching.  I think I may have to revisit my policy where I give almost all new shows at least 3 weeks to impress me.  My PVR is full and the shows keep coming.

By end of tonight still in my queue are:  Journeyman (x2), Cane (x2), Bionic Woman, My Name is Earl, Without a Trace, Las Vegas, Mad Men, Big Bang Theory, Chuck, K-Ville, Reaper and Gossip Girl.  On tap for tonight’s viewing is Prison Break and Heroes from last night and maybe Law & Order: SVU.

Based on what you’ve watched is there anything you can recommend me dropping.  Let me know.

The Season is Over

May 25, 2007

Tonight is the first night of the rest of my summer.  No new TV to watch tonight (unless you count unaired episodes of the already dead Studio 60) and some slim pickings for the next few months.  Still, don’t mistake slim pickings for low quality.  We still have the end of The Sopranos, a lot more Entourage, Big Love, Rescue Me and a couple more HBO shows.  I’ll write more about the summer schedule as it gets released.

I am going to spend the next few days writing up my thoughts on the last bunch of sweeps episodes.  I might not write in as much detail as I would normally but I’m going to be going for volume.

My “best of” list for the season will be coming in the next few weeks.  Stay tuned.

Back to the Blog

May 23, 2007

I’ve been away for the past few days but I’m happy to say that I’m back and ready to bring you my thoughts on exciting sweeps action.  The next few posts will cover some of the great and not so great from the past week including American Idol, The Sopranos, The Office, Heroes, Brothers & Sisters and The Shield.  I may also hit some of the items making news.
So without further ado…… Avi start your fingers.

Avi the Slacker is Back

May 6, 2007

This past week I’ve been away on vacation – far away from the wonderful world of sweeps.  Yep, on the cruise ship there was no new Heroes, Veronica, Sopranos, or The Office just old reruns of mostly lousy CBS shows.  On top of that as much as I like to write here, at $.50 a minute I decided better to take a break.

But now I’m back and I’ll be with you for the rest of sweeps.  Unfortunately I’m really behind on my viewing but by tonight expect postings on The Sopranos, The Office and last week’s Heroes.

It’s good to be back.

Complete Season 1 of WKRP in Cincinnati on DVD – What Crap!

April 6, 2007

I’m a huge WKRP fan. I’ve been waiting for them to release the show on DVD ever since the powers that be started releasing TV shows on DVD. Well, now the show’s been released and despite being billed as The Complete First Season the episodes are far from complete. Between almost complete music replacement and inclusion of syndicated versions instead of the originally aired versions, this DVD set is not close to the WKRP I remember.

I appreciate that it’s hard to secure all the music rights and I definitely think it’s better to see the show in some form than for it to never be released. Personally though, I’d rather find a way to see the show as it was originally meant to be seen.

For those of you who are interested in purchasing, make it an informed purchase. Here’s a link to a review of all the changes that were made.

Cancelled: Black Donnellys, The Wedding Bells, Six Degrees and 7th Heaven

April 4, 2007

Variety reports on a whole raft of cancellations.  Now normally when shows are cancelled I like to opine on how they have been taken before their time and how if only the networks supported them they would still be on the show.

Not in this case.

Black Donnellys – boring.

The Wedding Bells – painful from the first minute.

Six Degrees – I wrote this one off long before it went off the air the first time.

7th Heaven – Up yours CW.  I’m glad this tanked for you after you chose this over the incredible Everwood.

The only bad thing I have to say about Black Donnelys, Wedding Bells, Six Degrees and 7th Heaven being cancelled is that since I didn’t watch any of them I don’t gain any extra viewing time in my schedule.

What Show Will You Save? An E! Online Poll

March 30, 2007

E!Online is running a poll asking people to vote on the one show they would save from a list of programs that are “on the bubble”.  According to Ain’t it Cool News the show that has received the most votes the last five years running has been renewed.

Of the 17 shows on the list there are 5 that I’m pulling for: 30 Rock, Friday Night Lights, How I Met Your Mother, Scrubs and Veronica Mars.  But according to the rules I can only choose one.  Last year my vote would have gone to Veronica Mars hands down but this year I have to vote for Friday Night Lights, especially after watching last night’s amazing hour  It’s not that I don’t want the rest to make it but rules are rules.

Avi’s Reading Ramblings: My New Blog

March 21, 2007

You might notice on the side bar that I’ve added a feed from another blog.  This is my new place to track books that I read.  It won’t be updated as frequently as this blog but given that I read about a book a week I expect to post an update at least as frequently.  I also may review arcs from good comic books that I read as well.

Let me know what you think.

American Idol – How I Did This Week and the Delusions of Simon Cowell

March 16, 2007

Whoo, hoo.  I finally got it right.  Brandon got booted last night just like I predicted.  He definitely wasn’t the worst but between forgetting the words, generally sucking and going first and not having the “fan base” of Sanjaya he was toast.

Now on to Simon.  He’s being interviewed on 60 Minutes this week and check out this excerpt as reported by the Orlando Sentinel:

In the interview, Cowell tells Anderson Cooper: “I sell more records than Bruce Springsteen.”

The rock star has a contract with Sony BMG  reported to be in the neighborhood of $100 million.  “In the last five years, I’ve probably sold over 100 million records,” Cowell says. “If [Springsteen] got 100 [million dollars], I should have got 500.”

Awesome.  Let me make sure I understand this, Simon is the judge of a talent show and Bruce is one of the greatest singer/ songwriters ever (listen to The Wild, the Innocent and the E-Street Shuffle and then come back and disagree).  I see how it would be possible to confuse the level of talent between the two.  I think the marketing guy at Sony BMG, the Fox editors and camera people on the set and have almost as much claim as Simon.  Silly, silly man.
